Sabbath Year of Rest

JULY, 2011

For six years you may plant your fields and prune your vineyards
and harvest your crops, but during the seventh year the land will
enjoy a Sabbath year of rest to the LORD. Do not plant your crops
or prune your vineyards during that entire year.
– Leviticus 25:3-4 [NLT]

Greetings, Everyone, in the Name of the Risen Christ!
We are very much accustomed to thinking of “Sabbath” as being one day a week dedicated to the LORD: a day away from the normal activities and responsibilities of our lives, focused on rest and remembering God’s goodness toward us.  Rarely do we think of it being a season, and, I would suggest, none of us thinks of it as being a year of rest and focus on God.

Well, Kim and I aren’t planning on a year of Sabbath, not even a season, but we are planning on about 10 days of rest and renewal with Pete and Isaac down in Florida (5/30-6/9).  Given their scoliosis correction surgery last year which took up nearly their entire summer vacation and the fact that next year they’ll be graduating from high school, we are taking some time together down at Disney World in Orlando and then a few days with my family in Pensacola.  (Daryl and Carly & Brent have young adult responsibilities that will keep them here.)

We are really looking forward to experiencing God’s design for Sabbath time after a very busy and very intense year and are deeply grateful to all of you who support us so well and make this possible for us.  Many thanks to Pastor Amos, John Bauman, and Pastor Millard for leading worship in my absence this month.

Our prayer for each of you is that you will likewise set aside some time this summer for rest and renewal and for taking stock of God’s goodness in your lives by a change of pace and scenery.  You may not be able to go far away (we are only rarely able to do so), but that doesn’t mean you can’t experience God’s desire to bless you with
the riches of Sabbath time close to home.

On Fire for Christ,
Pastor Steve
