Coming up this Sunday, Dec. 16th, I am continuing our Advent theme of "Songs of Expectation" at Fort Collins First UMC. It's the third Sunday of Advent, and the focus is on exploring what it may have been like for Mary and Joseph to not just be faithful members of their Jewish community but to trust God with their lives as they followed what they sensed as His will for them. The SCRIPTURE passage for Sunday is Luke 1:26-38.
What must it have been like for a young, unmarried Jewish girl and her betrothed (fiance) to accept the public stigma of a questionable pregnancy which they professed was not as everyone thought but, rather, was of God's design? It really wasn't about faith but about trust. We'll be exploring that on Sunday.
As part of that, Sarah Lillie and I will be singing a duet with our wonderful choir joining us on the chorus called "The Song of Mary and Joseph" which is a piece from a larger work called Christmas Seekers, a cantata by John Purifoy. It expresses Mary's exuberance at being God's surprise choice to be the one who would give birth to His Son; it also expresses the confidence that she and Joseph had in God's leading of their lives in whatever lay ahead for them.
But it's not just in the big, extraordinary events of life that trust in God can be manifested; it is also in the mundane, the everyday, the common places that we all live that trust in God can be on display. If you have any stories about how you've seen trust in God demonstrated in either extraordinary OR ordinary circumstances, I'd love to hear them. It may be just the story that carries the word of God to someone in worship on Sunday.
God's blessings to you this week - see you Sunday,
Steve
