We are in a season of stewardship here at Ft. Collins First United Methodist Church, and we're considering stewardship from a couple of different angles. One has to do with how we give of our resources to the work of the church that is going on now; we reflected on that together this past Sunday. Over the next several weeks, many in the congregation are getting together in the homes of friends or "friends-to-be", sharing in dessert (if they enjoy dessert), watching a great video that was produced in-house highlighting a few - and only a few - of the ministries of the Church, and talking about the different aspects of this fall's stewardship drive.
The other angle, which we'll be looking at this coming Sunday, Oct. 20th, has to do with realizing that the Christian community of the here-and-now must ask itself what kind of legacy it is building for those in the next generation. David Brower, the late, prominent environmentalist from the latter half of the last century, said, "We don't inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children." The question I think of then, is "Are we 'paying it forward' with interest? Do our children encounter a larger, more beautiful earth than we did?"
In terms of church life, the legacy we create is one of love - understood and experienced as originating in God and passed on to our children and grandchildren by how we live our lives. Jesus modeled this in His rebuke of His disciples, who were preventing parents with children from bringing them to Jesus for His blessing: "Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs."
Hope to see you Sunday,
Steve
