Hi All,
One of my favorite Psalms is Ps. 25 - memorable for me because of a beautiful musical setting by Tim Manion, who was part of a group of musicians called "The Saint Louis Jesuits" in the '70's and '80's. The piece is entitled "I Lift Up My Soul"; you can click here and listen, if you'd like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEOCTp5ACgc
Stacy Miller, our Assistant Choir Director and singer in the Choir, and I will be singing that song as part of worship and will invite the congregation to join us in response to the sermon. Very much looking forward to doing this piece with Stacy.
Learning God's ways is not easy - the Psalmist expresses his (or her) faith in God's ability and desire to impart a sense of understanding to us as we wrestle with the life of faith. The direction the message will take is what Anselm of Canterbury (c. AD/CE 1100) called "Faith Seeking Understanding". In that, I will explore - in the context of Psalm 25 - how the "sensibility" of faith often follows belief rather than being a precondition for it. If we withhold trust in God until we "figure it all out", we often completely miss a life of faith. But if we seek understanding in the light of a faith already experienced and committed to, our understanding "morphs" into wisdom, perseverance, and deep peace.
Join us this Sunday at Ft. Collins First UMC! I hope to see you in worship. And, as usual, if you have any thoughts or suggestions or stories related to this topic, send them along if you'd like to consider contributing (anonymously, of course) to the sermon.
God's blessings to you this week,
Steve
