Coming up this Sunday, June 23rd, I thought we'd take a look at one of the best-known Psalms in the collection: Psalm 23. Seemed fitting to consider the 23rd Psalm on the 23rd (of June). But I wonder how many of us possess an association with sheep and sheep herding to make the metaphor of "the Lord being our Shepherd" something lively and powerful, as it would have been in its indigenous setting.
Well, in addition to exploring aspects of the shepherd's role in caring for the sheep and how those aspects may or may not give us reason to exercise our "Scriptural imagination" (see the reference to Duke Divinity School on my blog post from 6/6/13 on Psalm 42), there is a surprising translational twist at verse 6 that is well worth coming to hear about. In addition, the music will be excellent (again!) this Sunday. It is Gene Stenger's last Sunday with us, and he will be featured for a couple of pieces. We'll miss you, Gene!
Given our agricultural setting here in Ft. Collins, if anyone has any experience with sheep or shepherds that you'd like to pass on to me for consideration for the sermon - especially as it pertains to helping us get into the Psalm's Sitz im Leben (situation in life), I'd love to hear from you.
Blessings in Christ - the Good Shepherd,
Steve
